ENGL 26106. WRITING THE NOVEL In this course, you will study the novel as a literary genre and will begin work on your own novel-length project as well as engaging in literary research. We will read and discuss three novels in detail in order to understand how they work on a structural level and how readers respond to them; we will also read and discuss nonfiction/critical works that address the structure and history of the novel. What is the modern literary novel? How did it develop from the novels less illustrious beginnings in the eighteenth century? What do we, as readers, look for in novels, and how can we as writers explore the possibilities of this genre? This course will further develop your skills as a writer and critic of fiction and will also enable you to launch your work on a novel-length writing project, with the support of your classmates critiques and my comments. Prerequisite 16100 or permission of instructor [AH].
