ENGL 16007. TRAVEL WRITING Travel writing shapes our encounters with specific places; conversely, the encounter with place inevitably shapes the traveler. In the 21st century, too, the travel genre has diversified well beyond the printed page. This course explores the historical conventions, strategies, and current practices of travel writing, both print and digital. We will emphasize strategies for resisting the tendency to "other" or exoticize unfamiliar cultures, theoretical frameworks including postcolonial and intersectional theory, and integrating students off campus study experiences. The course will culminate in a student-designed digital travel magazine, to include both prose and photography, so participants should be interested in producing travel writing of their own as well as in some aspect of digital writing, photography, website or text editing and/or publishing.
